When the caterpillar breaks out of the egg it starts to eat like there's no tomorrow. It even eats the shell it just emerged from. Little holes start to appear in the Milkweed leaves, signaling that they are well on their way to becoming butterflies. Frass (waste) shows up beneath the holes and has to be kept from piling up.
Holes showing up in the top of the leaves resting on damp paper towels in a plastic container with lid.
The underside of the leaves with holes and caterpillars eating the Milkweed. Little specks of frass show up beneath the holes.
Close up of the caterpillar.
I am still waiting for another Lady Monarch to appear in my garden and bring more eggs to take care of.
